Hello! My name is Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and I am a mixed-media artist living in New York City. I can usually be found holed up in my tiny apartment playing with my papers and fabric and beads. I love to integrate my various crafting skills and so you will often find quilting techniques in my scrapbooks, or photos in the jewelry I make, or scrapbooking supplies embellishing a quilt! My artistic style is best described as "Cultural Anthropology With A Homemade Look." I like art that looks handmade – full of handwriting, uneven cuts, doodling, handmade embellishments, tearing, inking, hand stitching, etc. I have been published in multiple scrapbooking magazines and books, serve on design teams for manufacturers, kit clubs and online stores, have won awards for my quilts, and regularly sell my jewelry. I hope that my classes will open you up to new ideas and inspire you to continue to create beautiful handmade crafts of all kinds! | Available CoursesWe will put the “scrap” back into “scrapbooking!” Over the three weeks of the course you will create a system for storing and using your paper scraps, learn various ways in which you can use scraps to create unique background papers, learn how to use your scraps to create one-of-a-kind embellishments, and walk away with at least four completed layouts. This course is suitable for beginners through advanced scrapbookers as the end of each lesson will include an easy, medium, and hard assignment for you to choose from. November 26 - December 16, 2007 Enrollment begins October 29, 2007. There is no kit for this class. Most supplies can be pulled from your existing stash of papercrafting supplies. I have a list of suggested supplies here. Cost: $38.00 Learn to sew your own one-of-a-kind purse! You will receive an easy to follow pattern and step-by-step directions to create your own purse. Over the three weeks of the class, I will walk you through every step including fabric selection, tools, and basic sewing queries. You will learn multiple ways of adding and creating embellishments such as fabric roses, as well as ways in which to make your purse more useful, such as how to create a cell phone pocket. We will even discuss how you can tweak the “Simple Purse Pattern” in order to create an enormous variety of beautiful handbags! Beginners are welcome. You can complete the project without a sewing machine, but it is helpful (and faster) to have one. For handstitchers, we will mostly use a running stitch. For machine sewers, we will mostly use a basic straight stitch. For all students there is some hand sewing (ex. creating the fabric roses). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
